There is a competition going on, but it's not like something you can win in that way. "I mean, I went through a time when I was in New York, and I was going to lots of auditions and trying to get parts, but even then, you're not really competing with the other actresses. "I don't see myself as competing with other actresses," she says. In terms of her own career, Bening says that she doesn't feel that the character's plight is reflective of a real-life competition for parts. So being able to do that in a way is terrifying, and in another way, truly liberating. With the camera so close, you can see right down into your soul, hopefully.
"I remember hearing someone say that good acting is more about taking off a mask than putting one on, and in movie acting, certainly that's true. "It's a movie about masks in a way," Bening explains of the film. She plays Julia Lambert, an aging English stage star who finds her joie de vivre rejuvenated when she falls into bed with an American half her age, only to discover her young paramour has designs on helping one of her competitors. With Being Julia, Bening combines all of those personas in a very specific way, and offers an entirely new role to immortalize her countenance on screen.
